20 things i’ve learned over the past year.

  1. Running can be fun and also addictive. But you have to have a goal. Without a goal, I’m more likely to talk myself into an episode of Downton Abbey and a bowl of cheese. With one, I’m motivated by the shiny metal at the finish line.
  2. More than 2 glasses of wine on a week night will definitely be regretted in office lighting at 8 am.
  3. Don’t ever date someone that doesn’t make you feel wanted.
  4. Fishing clears the mind, eases the heart, and is best done any day of the week.
  5. Always remember that sometimes a simple visit to see your grandmother can be the highlight of her day/week/month. And while it’s good for her, it’s good for you to remember you can make that happen.
  6. Don’t give your phone number out to strangers. After the Asheville half, I started making my way to my car as quickly as possible to make it to Clemson for kickoff. Dan chased after me, told me he’d paced with me, and asked if I was hanging around. He asked for my number 3 times before I relented. 30 consecutive texts from him without a response and I finally think I’ve kicked him. But I won’t make that same mistake again.
  7. When questioning a large purchase, think it over for the weekend and go back for it.
  8. The fish bowl needs to be cleaned a lot more frequently than your ten year old cousin tells you it does.
  9. If you make anything, people will assume you were influenced by pinterest. There’s a such thing as pinteresting. People have pinterest parties. It’ll never be craft night or pot luck at your friend’s house again.
  10. It’s impossible not to judge your friend’s facebook statuses during debates or gamedays so you should probably steer clear of social media completely on those nights.
  11. Sometimes you need to say you’re busy even if you’re not just so you can have a night off. Sometimes you say it because you don’t want to hurt the person’s feelings down the road when you’re just not on the same page as they are. Sometimes you really do need to wash your hair and watch You’ve Got Mail again.
  12. People expect a lot more out of their weddings than your bank account allows.
  13. No one who treats you wrong should ever be allowed a space in your heart. Or in your inbox.
  14. Sometimes your best friends will emerge out of the worst times of your life. It makes them even more special.
  15. Your mom may very well be the best friend you’ll ever have. And don’t you ever forget it.
  16. The more green tea you drink, the more you love it.
  17. Sometimes you just have to take the punch, bite your tongue, and move on. Because speaking up doesn’t always conjure the result you hope for.
  18. If your mom knows you’re at the beach, she better also know you have sunscreen on.
  19. You can’t fix everyone in the entire world’s poor grammar, much to your own despair.
  20. Some people are not going to like you. Some people are going to let you down. Some people are going to act really nice to your face and to your best friend’s face and then they’re going to tweet something really nasty that they think you’re not going to get but you do. But you’ll get over it. I promise you, you will.
